A UNITED CHALET SCHOOL deals with the half term after the excitements, including the 'Mystic M' and a kidnapping dealt with in THE NEW CHALET SCHOOL. A little peace may have been reasonably hoped for, but not so long as Middles have any say in the matter.
The book begins with the prefects discussing their suspicions that the Middles are breaking dormitory ruls and sneaking out at night. They get permission to stay up late to nab the culprits. Joey lands up among them and the whole set catch the Middles red-handed on the roof, rehearsing a play, produced and directed by Elizabeth Arnett. After much discussion, they settle on a punishment which certainly has its funny side and squshes the middles completely for some time.
But more adventures are in store. Joey and the Robin accompany the girls on their half term trip and go to stay with Wanda. On their way back, the coach is caught in a fierce thunderstorm with no way of either going back or advancing. Finally they have to put up with the rather alarming experience of spending all night in the coach, with the water rising steadily around them.
A pleasant break is provided by the arrival of Jo's book "Cicely Holds the Fort" from the publishers.
Altogether, it was a hectic half a term, but it did have the effect of drawing the Chalet girls and the pupils from St. Scholastika's much closer than they had been before and the curtain falls on a truly united Chalet School.
