This short story was originally published in 1947 in THE CHALET BOOK FOR GIRLS and subsequently in the same binding as CHALET SCHOOL AND ROSALIE in 1987
Dorcas Brown is a new girl at the Chalet School and quickly settles into Lower Fifth, where she makes friends with the second triumvirate - Gay Lambert, Jacynth Hardy and Gillian Culver. However, everyone regards Dorcas as a 'mystery' because she refuses to say anything about her home life or her family.
Joey also notices this when Dorcas attends the customary 'new girls' afternoon at her house but, like the girls, says nothing about it.
When half-term rolls around Dorcas is left at school. One of the treats is going to see a film starring the lovely Eunice Brownlow and everyone gets very excited. On the morning of the film, Dorcas arrives at breakfast with a short hair and doesn't give any clue as to why she cut her hair.
After watching the film, Dorcas proves herself a heroine, when she saves one girl from a nasty accident. Unfortunately, by saving the girl, Dorcas gets quite badly injured.
The term ends with the customary Christmas play and also a big surprise for all the Chalet girls.
