Frequently Asked Questions
about collecting

Q: Is The New Chalet Club a book club?

A: No it isn't. The club is an appreciation society (fan club) devoted to the works of Elinor Brent-Dyer.

Q: Can The New Chalet Club help me buy books?

A: No, the club does not buy books to sell on to others. If you are a current member of the club then you can advertise in the Journal. If someone puts up too many titles, the Web Admin will check whether it is a private advert and if it is a commercial advert the message will be removed.

Q: Can The New Chalet Club help me sell books?

A: If you are a current member of the club then you can advertise in the Journal. There is currently no facility for non-members to advertise in the Journal or on this site.

Q: I'm a new collector - how do I know whether a Chalet School book is valuable?

A: The best rule of thumb is to look at the publishing information (usually on either the page before the title page or on the reverse of the title page) and if it has lots of years listed, it is not going to be as valuable as if there was only a few dates.

Q: I'm not a collector - how do I know whether a Chalet School book I have found in the attic is valuable?

A: There are two answers to this question.

(1) If it is a paperback it is not very likely to be valuable (unless it is a copy of THE CHALET SCHOOL AND ROSALIE, which was published in paperback in the early 1950s). The best rule of thumb is to look at the publishing information (usually on either the page before the title page or on the reverse of the title page) and if it has lots of years listed, it is not going to be as valuable as if there was only a few dates.
(2) If you have found a hardback and the most recent date in the string of dates in it is in the 1950s then again, it may not be as valuable as books which have earlier or later dates or a single date in the 1950s.

Q: Can a book dealer value books by post?

A: Book dealers find it incredibly difficult to do this unless you send the book(s) to them. The best idea is to write to a dealer asking if they would be happy to value any books if you sent them to the dealer.

Q: Can I advertise books for sale in the Journal?

A: If you are a current member of the club, then yes.

Q: My parents gave all my books away while I wasn't at home, what do I do?

A: The only thing you can do is to accept the fact that you'll have to start collecting all over again.

Q: I have lost my collection. Can the club help me get them back?

A: The club is not able to help in this way; the only thing to do is to start collecting all over again.
